A HAPPY - 2011 TO ALL PEOPLE ON THE THREAD All, but particularly 1st and 5th Tankies in 1962 . In Dec 62, 1st and 5th RTRs each received a prototype Chieftain. A friend of mine, Bob Griffin who wrote the excellent reference book on Chieftain, is researching more material. He realises it would have been 'naughty' of people to take photos or 'notes' about the vehicles but, hopes that, in true Tankie fashion, someone may have done just that. So, please if anyone has anything of interest such as Reg Nos or photos, please contact me, you shouldn't be harmed in the making of the book!!! ;D Cheers chaps Oh, and if you haven't already, take a look at my newly re-built website - it's verrrrrry nice moi luvvers!!!! New RTR stuff coming along all the time. www.malcyart.co.uk

I have been contacted by Bob Griffin who compiled the book about the Chieftain Tank. He's managed to get interior and exterior plans of Chieftain 900 but, the Tank Museum have very little on the subject. He came across some photos the other day including one where a crew member on trials was wearing black coveralls and even though he realises it could have been a civvy, wonders if any Third were involved who may be able to help him 'under questioning' about the project. So, if any of you were involved in the Chieftain 900 project give me a shout please and I'll put you in touch. Thankin 'ee koindly zur's.

Okay guys and gals These items sadly now won't ship before Xmas with any form of guarantee!!! But, if you go to my website and enter into the distant realm known as the MalcyArtShop page!!! You'll see there are now Rugby shirts in Black or Green sporting the Armoured Framer Logo AND...............A rather fetching black fleece hat with the logo on especially for the coming cold spell!! Road tested this hat for comfort and warmth............it's very comfortable and very warm!! Further to that.............if people aren't all together trustful of the PayPal system..............they can (as trusted 3RTR family members) order on the telling bone to me as I have a machine which now accepts most any cards!!! Anyway, that's the news so pop by and .....well, buy something from my shop.........please?!?!?! LOL!!

Right, I took ages writing a new thread then........beggered it up so, at this time of the morning having been up all night revamping the Prints for sale in my MalcyArtShop page on my site............I'll keep it short. 1. New prints on my site for sale one's a Stalwart!!!! 2. Smaller size (A4) but signed, ready mounted and sellophane wrapped - all you need is an off the shelf frame so get on...pop in and have a look then......start collecting!!! 3. MalcyArt going full time for me due to long unemployment so the MalcyArt roadshow may rock up at a military event near you!!!! 4. My EBay shop is closed so my website is the only place you can buy my EXCLUSIVE designs...except roadshows when I'm out and about!! 5. New mug printing service coming on line soon!!! Cheers Arfur!!!!!!

All depends what Sqdn you want. 'A' starts with a 1,'B' with a 2 and 'C' with a 3.e.g.Say you want Tp Sgt 10 Tp C Sqdn that would be c/s 32A or Tp Ldr 7 Tp B Sqdn would be c/s 23 and so on.Hope that helps. Greentanky now I am confused, I have photo's of my dads troop in Suez which was 9th Troop C Sqn and they had 1 troop leader, 1A Sgt Jock Lumsden, and 1B which was the old mans tank so I thought 1 to 4 troops in all the Sqns were numbered that way. Sgt Jacknik was in A Sqn and his C/S was 4A unless they only used this method during the war? Also what would be the OC, 2IC, SQMS and SSM'S C/S be? In todays C/S they would be OB, OC, 23A, 33A Cheers Paul Gruffster mate Green Tanky is well on the button Sqn OC A Sqn Sqn Ldr - 1A 2i/c - 1B Tp Sgt (Full screw normally) 1C - Dozer 1st Troop 11=Ldr 11A= Sgt 11B = Cpl And so on 2 to 4 Troop Each Squadron would then have a different pre-cursor ie: B=2 - C=3 As far as I'm aware, D Squadron as a formation did not happen until at least 1979. 3RTR certainly had GW etc as part of C&S Sqn until D Squadron formed as we were in Paderborn. As GT says, I think what is confusing you is Specific to Operation callsigns which you appear to be describing.....It may have been that instead of a Squadron Number ie 14A- they may have used a form of continually changing callsign indicator for each Squadron on a Command net such as Sierra4A..........even though ad-hoc systems shouldn't happen....they do.....look at Iraq where C/S's were substituted by a lettering system. The OC used to take the callsign of his tank as his nomer ie - OC A Sqn = 1A then he could split by using 'Sunray speaking' eg. He did have a personal callsign but beggared if I can remember it now.......have got a Pam 9 but not that old!!!

When he comes back he'll 'throw the switch' giving you access (and tell you when done) then, when you log on next time - go to 'forums' and scroll right to the bottom and lo, as it was in the beginning, you'll find the 'hide' containing all us ex 3rd and..............many more fans who find us amusing. Cheers mate.

Pictures always conjure up memories. I remember a certain 2Lt Sinclair riding his motor bike off the top stand of the swimming pool, did not do him or his bike much good. The AKC, visited that establishment on so many occasions. Any one able to tell me the significance of the C/sign 993A Over on Arrse's RAC thread, the answer to this from a couple 'senior' chappies was 99= Callsign indicator ie: Armoured, and 3A would be 3rd Troop Sgt of any Sqn as Sqn's weren't sub-designated at that time in the old C/S system the new more familiar one coming in during the very early sixties. So presumably Ken would be right that this was A Sqn just that it's the Tp Sgt of 3 Troop. Equally of course, it could have been third Tp Sgt of B or C Sqns. A question from me - Did the Third always number the Troops through the entire Sqns IE: In the 70s/80s 1 Tp A Sqn, to 17Tp D Sqn (missing out 13Tp)? It seems to be pretty unique within the RAC that we did that??

Ken Parker was indeed in 3 RTR in 57/59 and Conquerors did arrive in 1958. Officers wore black overalls. ORs at that time only had olive green. Ken Parker. Welcome aboard and good day cobber, another one joins the fold!!

God only knows how I fit my time in around the various bits and bods I have to do including making a shirt for the JLR re-union!!!! and designing a CD cover for their digitally remastered JLR Band album. Anyway chaps, I've now got the final design proofs of the new polo shirt and the sample will be with me next week some time. Here is what will be on a fruit of the loom black polo shirt. I'll post prices when I get them from the manufacturers. Now, this shirt will be made to order in S,M,L,XL and XXL as people order so please, if people want to use PayPal and start ordering now tell me so I can make an item on my website. The shirt will NOT be available at either my EBay shop or the Bristol re-union assuming I make it as, I don't want a war with TC's merchandising so I've had to make the decision that it's Website only or, if I can make it, Plymuff this year. Anyway, plenty of feedback please as I've had to redraw the tank to suit the smaller design. The black writing will also be white on the actual polo shirt. This design will also be available on a new fleece!! Once more pay and order before production.

Only thing with the list is.....................don't believe everything you see, some listed as smelted...............weren't. Steve Jacklin has an exhaustive list of Chieftains.....he's found a lot that were never smelted because the foundry ran behind and did 'back handers' to privateers for disposal.

How many of you wore the old hob nailed boots? They were great to listen to when you were marching in a squad although I must admit the DMS boots were more comfortable. Not as an issue item but, 75 in JLR we had to purchase them for drill........................brought mine from the big Naval Warehouse on the waterside who's name escapes me. Excellent boots but a pig to bull up with hot spoon handles, good quality polish and candles....................total hell to walk, march in as it was like being on a sheet of ice...............but the sound...........made you feel 8 foot tall!!! Sold them at passoff to a first termer.

Thank you guys, guest from 4RTR here. Great site and good to recognise names of many I have met during our travels. I need a favour, some friends of mine are looking for a couple of guys that joined the Third in 1965 and we are hoping you can help. They are Chris Jeffrey and Chris Wells. Any news would be gratefully received. Meanwhile, please pass my regards to Grubby Mertons and his family (best thing the Third ever did for the Fourth, loaning him to us. Never heard the JJ nickname before) and to Tony Spring, I handed over to him in BATUS and I hear you also loaned him to the Fourth. Again, geat site and thank you for allowing me to view and ask questions. My name, Alex (Ginge) Finlay Alex Willkommen Chris Jeffreys (assuming he's the same one) is an active member of 3RTR, he is a keen golfer the best contact for him would be Elovabloke on these pages.
