I hope Argentina doesn't decide to invade the Falklands again because these defence cuts will certainly hamper any efforts by us to defend it.

I personally never voted for this lot. They were never given a mandate by the electorate but now that they have legislated to allow themselves a full term in government there is nothing we the electorate can do about it Adam. Clever man for the first time in the history of parliament has a minority government given itself the power to stay in government even if it lost a vote of no confidence, it is nothing more than disgraceful. The saddest thing of all is that the working class now think they are middle class and they consider the underclasses which means people on benefits are below contempt. We all knew we could not continue with the benefit system as it is but that was in the hope that a government would actually look at finding those who abused the system. When our old age pensioners receive little more than £6,500 as a couple and illegal and legal immigrants are given benefits averaging £26,900 it just beggars belief don't you think. Our armed forces must remain independent from Europe for the good of our own country and its defences, I would much rather see the removal of trident and all that money ploughed into the three forces that make up our armed forces.

What do you all feel about the proposed spending review which this government is about to force upon our wonderful armed forces. We were building two large aircraft carriers now only one is going ahead. The proposed cuts will see massive redundancies and according to the Minister of defence we will become part of a European army probably under the control of the Europeans and not our own home bred and trained Generals etc.

Sorry I have taken so long Andy to reply, but I thank you for the chance to speak privately with you and Pat this subject was closed on the 16th May and I was under the impression you knew that my friend.
God bless to you all, Dear Alfredo I hope that everyone concerned hears your words but I fear that there are those who will stop at nothing to decry the situation sadly.
Hope we have a wonderful summer to enjoy.

Did you feel that the temptation to take the redundancies left the army and the RTR's and Cavalry regiments in particular in a situation that some men were made up in rank because of seniority (in the sense of time with the regiment) and experience rather than being made up on merit. I had a cousin who served with the RCT as a Staff Sergeant in the first gulf war and he says it was chaos. I also had a chap who worked as a fitter for the company I was a commercial director at he had been a flight sergeant and was a brilliant fitter but he took redundancy but he said he felt he had no choice. He stated that many of the SNCO's were removed to allow younger lads through, younger but less experienced and knowledgeable. I was not there I had left in late 1972 so I missed all that, but I have heard so many conflicting stories about the redundancies.
Most of the officers that served in the RTR regiment when I was a squaddie where really quite good, you always got one or two who were never really suitable sometimes because some where very young when they arrived and took over leadership roles that they were not quite ready to accept. But I think in the main we had some excellent officers, my OC in particular was one of them.

I tried to ask this question on ARRSE hoping for a good debate and a little fun, sadly instead it just encouraged idiots with brains the size of gnats bollocks. Hopefully this will turn out to be a little fun and informative. Back in the late seventies redundancy packages were offered to Sergeant's and upwards causing confusion because so many actually applied and took the deal it left regiments short of good senior NCO's. I had left the army back in the early seventies so I missed what happened next?

What puzzles me is your absolute and total aggression, I just can't see rhyme or reason for it. I am in agreement with you in most of what you have to say about airing dirty washing, but you will also note I neither get aggressive nor do I insult you, why you feel the need to do both is beyond me. What happened on the Arrse site was wrong and again I agree with you but it was understandable and I do see why one or two members of the new branch felt they had to defend themselves. As for telling the world the real Merseyside Branch is the Sefton Branch I can tell you this; The WW2 Veterans walked out of the Merseyside Branch which they "FOUNDED" because of the disgraceful acts and deeds that went on with the help of another Branch in the North of the country. As far as the members who have joined up at the new Sefton Branch are concerned they are the real Merseyside Branch and the WEBSITE which there are two one is called www.realmerseysidertra.net the other merseysiderealrtra.co.uk are both privately run sites and not the property of any branch. The WW2 veterans who have survived Hitler and Japan not to mention Korea deserve all the respect in the world and I would have thought you as an officer and gentleman would feel the same. Respect must be earned and these old gentlemen have certainly earned it as far as I can see. Note again no disrespect nor anger has been shown to you by me!!

I agree with you whole heartily and although I understand the anger that those you speak of feel, I too do not wish to see the dirty washing as you call it aired. But I can understand the need these people have to want others to know the truth as it really is. You yourself decided who was guilty when people from the other Branch gave out their story across the internet including the Arrse site,fearnought3, MerseysideRTR and the 1RTR.net site. Did you tell them not to air their dirty washing in public?? Whatever the outcome I do sincerely agree with your sentiments whilst at the same time those others you speak of want anyone who asks the question to know the truth. I just wish to see happiness reign down on everyone.

Strange you should say that Tanky, I sent my grandson for a box of megacycles for my guitar effects pedal. He charged off to the music shop exited, he was looking forward to doing some recording that afternoon with his grandpa. Wasn't too impressed though when he came home!!!!

I remember being sent for striped paint, long stands, short stands and sky hooks when I served my time as an apprentice motor mechanic, back in 1966, what a great decade to have lived in!!!!!

I don't like to see infighting myself, but I also don't like to see and read insulting language from anyone no matter what side you might take. Personally I would like to see this thread removed completely, while there are folk who might agree with each other there is certainly no reason to throw insults at someone just because you might have heard a different story somewhere else, it really does not mean that the story is true. I think personally all that is being asked here is recognition, the WW2 veterans have been officially recognized by RHQ after long battles against some who would prefer not to have them around. Recognition is not a lot to ask of ex serving and serving members of what is left of the RTRA Branches.

I am sorry Soprano that you feel that way. One of the members from the new branch did kick off a little but his heart is in the right place believe me. Just as Eric has stated there are two sides to every story but if any of us reacted to anything that has been stated on the two sites you point to, then we would be no better than those who are doing their very best to deride and degrade the lads who together with the WW2 and Korean Veterans are doing their best to bring back the pride that once resided with the branch.
I am not a member these days and I am terminally ill but all I want to see before I must face what God has in store for me, is to see the truth and light flourish which is the motto of the new Sefton branch. Sefton has been officially accepted by RHQ but the very people who run the sites and who are doing their utmost to stop the existence of Sefton, the very sites you refer to and that does not include the ARRSE site by the way, are trying to have the decision overturned. It has turned into a nasty war and far beyond children fighting in the playground.
But this is about the pride of these old gentlemen being preserved and goes back to when the branch was first started by them. These old soldiers have a marvelous history one which should be shown the utmost respect they deserve that at least. Sefton was started by them when they walked away from their original beloved branch, it goes back to the beginning for them from the 7th Kings Liverpool regiment which then became the 40th RTR. They are the most wonderful characters you could ever wish to meet if you find that hard to believe just drop in on them at the Old Roan pub on the A59 Preston Road.
As for their President and others being kicked off the other sites I can tell you this and hopefully I will not be going into the same territory as they are proclaiming they were kicked off purely and simply because of the personal issues with the very people who run and own the sites.
