Could it be Gyp of C Squadron, Just a guess, I seem to remember such a dog that was looked after by "C". If it is the dog in question it was buried out side the "C" Squadron block?

Doc Doughty we called him. Another great tankie gone to the green fields. Lots of tales could be told about Doc. IT must have been after my time that he had his turn looking after Gip. The dog allways stayed in SHQ rooms as I can remember. It just made up it,s own mind where it was going. Conquerers , One to a troop in all Squadrons. There was not a Conk only troop. I have a pic on here of 11 troop Conk. I'll put 10 troop's conk up later.

Would I be right in assuming Doc Doughty was a Gunnery god - I had a SSGT Doughty as my Goonery Instructor at JLR in 1975?!?!

It could be him. I never saw him again after 1960. I remember he was in 9 trp and yes he was supposed to be a Sh** hot gunner. I hear story's about him to this day at branch meetings. Geordie.

It could be him. I never saw him again after 1960. I remember he was in 9 trp and yes he was supposed to be a Sh** hot gunner. I hear story's about him to this day at branch meetings. Geordie. Well if twas him here's yet another story. JLR 1975 - Lulworth Ranges. There we all stood, ready for the day. SSGT Doughty reading us the riot act....again. All our SHPrac stood on arrrse in a neat square block ready for being blasted down range. 2 firing points away were a Regiment of Americans on M48s which had landed on the beach through the gap, a couple days earlier. Quite amusing they were as they roared back and forth behind the FP's in their deuce and 1/2s. Then, this morning, as we stood with said Staff giving us our brief, our attention was drawn to a lone yank stumbling haphazardly, up the road from their FP to ours. Suddenly he swerved violently and, steering totally fcuked, he came over and kicked the corner of our SHPrac formation, sending some 200 proj's toppling and rolling across the road. 'Doc' promptly went 'state scarlet' and started threatening the yank with a rearrangement of his internal organs. The yank? Well he just grinned lamely and, having given Doc 'the bird', swanned off up the road on his original course leaving our instructor in a state of apoplexy. About a minute later, a howling jeep complete with blue flashing light and white helmeted plods, screamed past us in pursuit of said American 'womble'. Having reached him they hurriedly leapt out, clubbed him with white batons, threw him in the back of the jeep and, fcuked off back down to their FP. Later, an American officer came to a:apologise and b:explain. It turned out the unit were fairly recently returned from 'Nam' and, had 2/3rds of their men under direct drugs supervision of their MO!!He then, by way of compensation, offered us as many spent 105mm shell casings as we wanted for ornaments. Doc, promptly accepted and, visions of my retirement with a couple of highly polished shells next to my fireplace, flewbefore my eyes!!! Each day, Doc had us lads unloading casings from the American trucks as they went to camp via our FP. Then, last day............Doc nicked the fcukin lot and took them to JLR Sgt's mess where, they lined every windowsill to remind us of what we never got!!!!!!TTTTWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT but, like all 3rd Tankies, a nice guy really!!!! God how I wanted 2 shell casings!! RIP to another good man.

At last, I've got them on The dog, by the way was "Henry" he usually laid his head in the officers mess, I think the food may have been a bit better. But if he ever saw a landrover door open he'd be in like a shot and there was no getting him out in a hurry.

Hi Tankie Where & when were you involved with Fred. Personally I had a lot of time for Fred, most of it was while we were in Cyprus at Zyyi, when I was MT Sgt. We went out to Limassol a few times for a meal with some of the Civilian suppliers & one of them invited us & most of the SGTs Mess to his daughters wedding, what a day that was!!!!!!!!! cobra19

Tankie. I have looked though about 100 old pic's of my day and I have no more with Fred Idia on. I have a old photo clipping from the amalgamation 1959 with 2 Sgt's in 11 trp. The out going Fred Idia and from the 6th tanks Bill reed. Poor photo but I put it up on the site see what you make of it. Until I can get to talk to Bill reed or Stan Patrick can't give you anymore info about him. Them 2 pic's you put on seams to be the same Fred.

The last I heard of Fred Hyder he was living in Poole or close by. The Opel Record he kept for many a year and was always in immaculate condition. I cannot remember his wifes name but they were friendly with Roy & Pat Holmes. Roy of course is no longer with us but his wife Pat continues to live in the Chesterfield area.
