birdseye. Never heard him called Sammy before. Stan Patrick was the Adjutant to C.O. Lt.Col, P.A. Vaux after the amalgamation between 3rd/6th in 1959. Had a drink with him on Wed at Newcastle Branch RTR Association. Never fails to impress me. Great bloke.

Germany: Sennelager
Amalgamations In 1953 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became Colonel-in- Chief of The Royal TankRegiment following the passing of King George VI, With the advent of the Suez Crisis in 956,amphibious ‘Buffalos” of 7th RTR and elements of 6th RTR served with the Anglo-French invasion force. The action was only halted by a United Nations call for a cease fire, Changes in Britain’s defence policy followed the Suez situation and The Royal Armoured Corps was reduced by six regiments, three cavalry and three Royal Tank Regiments. In order to achieve this, on 3rd April 1959 at Hohne, 4th and 7th RTR were amalgamated with the new title 4th Royal Tank Regiment. Later that same year, on 3 I st October at Sennelager, 3rd and 6th RTR amalgamated as 3rd Royal Tank Regiment. At Fallingbostel on lst July 1960, 5th and 8th RTR amalgamated as 5th Royal Tank Regiment. Thus the Royal Tank Regiment now consisted of five Regular and three Territorial Army Regiments, all of whom were presented with Standards (the first ever received by the Regiment) by the Colonel-in-Chief at Buckingham Palace on 27th October 1960. In the 1960s and 1970s life settled down to world wide service, with the Regiment being seen - often operating as detached Squadrons - in Aden, Bahrain, Borneo, Cyprus, Germany, North Africa, Northern Ireland and the Trucial Oman States amongst others. On 1st April 1967 4Oth/4 1st RTR (TA), the last remaining TA’ regiment of the RTR, amalgamated with The Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry on the reorganisation of the Territorial Army. On 7fh December 1969 5th Royal Tank Regiment was disbanded. In the I970s and I 980s all four RTR served as infantry for a number of operational tours in Northern Ireland.
Further Amalgamations
In October 1992 2RTR and 3RTR were amalgamated to form 2RTR and recruits from London, Kent, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Bristol and Somerset . A year later in October 1993, I RTR and 4RTR amalgamated to form I RTR , recruiting from Liverpool North West of England, Glasgow and Edinburgh

When we were in 'Falling-Bar-Stool' we were part of 11 Armd Bde (remember 11/3 painted on the vehs!). In Paderborn we were part of of Task Force ? then 6 Armd Bde, remember the 'Rhino'? Everybody stencilled together so it looked like they were shagging! ;D Then in Hemer, again we were in 6 Armd Bde, of course don't forget we had a Sqn in Cyprus when the Regiment were the RAC Centre Regiment and we went to NI in 90/91!!!

The only time 3RTR went to HOHNE in strength, was the night of the Vera Lynn concert during the 50th Anniversary celebrations. Another memorable event during those celebrations was when we all went to the Globe cinema, Padre Mallet was sent to Hamburg to select and invite a show to entertain us. He returned with the entire cast of the Salambo Club, thereafter if we went to Hamburg for the Sunday market on the Docks, calling first at the Salambo to fill in time !!we could gain free entry and a drink just by mentioning 3RTR!!!!!!!!

I guess names do tend to get changed around a little but must admit I alway remember the QM of 3RTR during the period 1959-64 being called Sammy Patrick. whether Sammy was his true name or not I do not know. The next guy on the scene was Tosh Ham, don't suppose Tosh was his true name either?

Hi Geordie When I was trucking, I used to use the BP truckstop at Birtley a lot and the "Angel" was called "Kevin" then when he turned his back on Newcastle ;D I was on a caravan site last week with a couple from Suderland who told me the Truckstop is now no more!!

Yes truck stop is no more. I think an estate of houses has been built on the site. The only time I go over that way is Xmas to stock freezer up. You might have seen the big balloon floating above Fawcet's the butchers on your travels up and down the A1
