Newspaper article:
THE heartbroken family of a man who died in a crash on Portland have paid tribute to him.
Former soldier Mervyn Thomas has been described as a 'gentleman' a 'great companion' and a man 'whose laugh would fill a room'.
Mr Thomas, 72, from Weymouth, died in hospital last Thursday from injuries he sustained in a crash the night before on Portland Beach Road.
He had been a passenger in a grey Peugeot 2008 which was in collision with a blue BMW.
Tragically, Mr Thomas' son Gareth was also the victim of a fatal road crash 13 years ago.
In a statement released by Dorset Police today, Mr Thomas' widow Lin Thomas and their daughter Suzanne said: "Words fail to convey the great sadness felt by myself, my daughter Suzanne and her son, following Mervyn's death.
“The utter tragedy of the similarities between the death of Mervyn and that of our son Gareth nearly 13 years ago seems particularly cruel."
Gareth died on July 18, 2004 when his motorcycle was involved in a collision with another vehicle on the coast road from Weymouth to Bridport.
Lin and Suzanne added: "Despite the communication difficulties Mervyn experienced, following a stroke in 2000, those close to him will remember him as loving all social events. His huge laugh would fill a room, we will forever miss hearing it.
