So much sadness, David Mallam who many of you will not know passed away yesterday. David was 3RTR late 50’s early 60’s. Published by the Regimental Colonel I regret to inform you that Col David Mallam passed away yesterday aged 75 after a long fight against cancer. Col David commissioned from RMAS as Sword of Honour winner in ‘57 into 3 RTR as a Tp Ldr until ’61. He was then ADC to C in C AFNORTH to ’62; qualified as a helicopter pilot and flew with the 4 RTR Recce Flt in Borneo and Malaya; was then 2IC A Sqn 4 RTR from ’66 - ’67; posted to British Army Staff, Washington, briefly in ‘68, before being Adjt 3 RTR in ‘68/’69. He attended RMCS Shrivenham and Staff College Camberley in ’69 & ’70; was then H/S the RAC Centre until he commanded the RAC Para Sqn from ’71 to ’73. He was then GSO2 SD4, HQ BAOR, from ’73 to ’75 before commanding 3 Regt AAC from ’75 to ’77. He was then GSO1 BAAT Nigeria from ’77 to ’80; then AA & QMG RMAS until ’82 before, in his final post, appointed to be Comdt AAC until his retirement in 1985. He was a keen rugby player for 4 RTR, the Ironsides and BAOR and, post retirement, heavily involved with the AAC Museum, the IWM Duxford and Curator of the Airborne Forces Museum, Aldershot. Col David is survived by his wife Carolyn, his daughters Frances and Alexandra, and son Edward. Mrs Carolyn Mallam’s address is available on request.
