John Patey who is now retired and living in Wokingham, Berkshire passed on these pictures to me. John was 6RTR and I believe briefly on amalgamation he also served with 3RTR. Pictures always tell so many stories but frequently so much is missing simply because names, dates and places are omitted. I have a limited amount of information but would be grateful if anyone could fill in any of the missing gaps.
Picture one shows Johns Dad, (WILLIAM JOHN PATEY) Picture two also shows Johns Dad with a cigarette in his hand, the one on his left was known as Kip. Both John’s Dad and Kip who was a very close friend finished up in 6 RTR. Picture three features John’s Dad on the right. You will note that in all the pictures the cap badge featured is that of the mailed fist, which leads me to believe the pictures were probably taken when they were doing their basic training, possibly Catterick?
Johns Dad was born March 1913 before joining the army he was with the Metropolitan Police. At 25 or 26 he joined the army, which according to my calculation would date the pictures around 1938/39. We know John’s Dad, and Kip both finished up in 6 RTR possibly others featured too finished up in 6 RTR not sure. As we know when joining the RAC training Regiment it was the Mailed fist cap badge that every one wore until they were badged to their respective Regiment.
