I recently took an holiday in Northern Cyprus one of the things I made a point of doing was to visit the British Cemetery in Kyrenia where you can see a war memorial dedicated to the three hundred and seventy one servicemen who were killed by EOKA action during the Cyprus Emergency 1955-59. The monument should really be sited at Waynes Keep which is situated in the buffer zone and where the service men are buried. It is hoped that if reunification ever takes place that is where the monument will be moved to. Featured on the monument was just one RTR soldier the details of his death are shown below. “WO2 Charles Francis MARTIN 4RTR is one of the 371 British Servicemen who died on active service during the four-year Cyprus Emergency April 1 1955 to April 18 1959, and whose name is among those remembered with honour on the British Cyprus Memorial. Serving with the Royal Tank Regiment he was killed when an electrically-operated bomb blew up his vehicle in Paphos on November 4 1956. Aged 36 from Wantage he is buried at Wayne’s Keep, the British military cemetery in Cyprus, Plot 23 Row C Grave 7.”

Hi Billywiz (sorry, I don't know your real name). Thank you for the above. During their more recent tours, 4RTR always made a point to visit Waynes Keep to remember those who died in Cyprus. However our memories show WOII Francis as 1RTR (maybe someone from 1RTR can confirm). We do have a 2lt AN Martin who was killed in 1948 (see attached from our regimental magazine published in 1989) Again, thank you for the memories. Alex

I see 2nd Lt Martin died 1948 and would not therefore feature in the book of remembrance showing those killed in the Cyprus emergency 1955-59. There is a little confusion as I did get information from two different sources suggesting that WO11 Martin was 4RTR though I can see on the link he is referred to as 1RTR. Will have to do a little more checking. Dave Have a look at these two links. www.britishcyprusmemorial.org/rollwww.friendsandrelations.com/partners/bcmt/html/book/

Dave, thank you for the links, much appreciated. If I hear any more, I'll let you know. Alex Alex, There appears to be conflicting information. On the attachment you submitted WO2 Charles Francis Martin is clearly shown as being 1 RTR if you check this link out you will see he is shown as 4 RTR. Also the death dates differ, Waynes Keep shows Nov 4 1956 while the link below shows Nov 1 1956. www.tankmemorial.vpweb.co.uk/Page3Contactus.html

Thank you Dave. I'm down in Bovington in July (JLR OBA), I'll ask the questions when I am down there. Personally, I think your version is probably correct.
