Help for Heroes is a new organisation formed to help those who have been wounded in Britain’s current conflicts.
I am Bryn Parry, a cartoonist. I was in the Army for ten years but nothing in my experience came close to what our servicemen and women are facing in Iraq and Afghanistan. I had an opportunity to visit the wounded at Selly Oak hospital and Headley Court Tri-service Rehabilitation Centre and was profoundly humbled to meet some extraordinary people there, both the wounded and their wonderful nursing staff.
I have organised an appeal to support our wounded. Help for Heroes is strictly non–political; we are leaving the talking to the politicians while we get on with raising a great deal of money to directly support our servicemen and women.
We have the backing of the head of the army, Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt and are working closely with the service charities especially the Army Benevolent Fund. Now we need your help to make this a national movement to support our Armed Forces.

My personal goal is to meet an initial target of £5m to be used to help provide urgently needed specialist facilities at the tri-service rehabilitation centre, Headley Court. Naturally, our great hope is that others, working under the banner of this appeal, will raise or donate additional and much needed cash to far exceed this amount. We will ensure that whatever sum eventually raised will be put to immediate and appropriate use.
Fund raising for Help for Heroes has already begun. Plans are underway for a signature event called The Big Battlefield Bike Ride. I am going to recruit and lead 300 volunteers to cross from Portsmouth to Normandy, and then ride through the battlefields of Normandy, Picardy and Somme before finishing in London on Sunday 1st June 2008. It will be a physically challenging but achievable ride, designed to link in the public mind Britain’s historic battlefields with those of today, and to raise awareness of the needs of our wounded. Each rider will become a fundraiser, assured and inspired in the knowledge that every effort expended in meeting the challenge will directly benefit our casualties. If you want to do something to really help our wounded and feel you are up to a challenge, then this could be for you.
I need 300 riders to get on their bikes and join me for a ride through the battlefields of Northern France and raise money to support our wounded.
The ride will begin on May 26th 2008 in Portsmouth before crossing to the beaches of Normandy, via Dieppe to the Somme and then to Calais. We will cross to Dover early on 1st June and travel by coach to London where we will join other rides and form a large group that will ride through the capital to the Cenotaph.
The detailed plans are being finalised but include unique events that ‘money can't buy’ and will make this trip a once in a lifetime experience. The ride will be challenging but achievable with proper training and you will have the satisfaction of knowing you are doing it for a very good cause.
Each rider will be a fund-raiser and will pledge to raise a minimum of £2000 so this will require commitment and a certain amount of your time. We will be helping with your efforts and training and we hope you will form your own team.
If you want to join the Big Battlefield Bike Ride, please register on the form and we will be in touch with more details as soon as we can. We look forward to seeing you there.
We are looking for sponsorship of the Big Battlefield Bike Ride and need to raise £200,000 to cover the costs. If you can help in any way please get in touch
We are also planning a Help for Heroes Action Week, with dates to be confirmed. The public will be asked to support our servicemen in any way they choose: sponsored walks, runs, swims, parachute jumps, dinners, balls, auctions; events limited only by your
Imagination.
Help for Heroes will go live on 1st October 2007. We need your help, your participation and of course, your donations. Please help us to spread the word by telling your friends about the appeal and help support our heroes.
Thanks
Bryn Parry
Appeal Chairman
Help for Heroes
Help For Heroes was the idea of Appeal Chairman Bryn Parry and a group of friends and relations, many of who have connections with serving servicemen and women. Bryn and his wife Emma wanted to do something to help the wounded and came up with the idea of a sponsored bike ride. They mentioned it to some friends who mentioned it to some more friends and suddenly Help For Heroes was born and growing fast. A flurry of visits to various offices led to the campaign being blessed by the head of the army, Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt.
Help For Heroes is backed by the Army Benevolent Fund, the Army’s own charity that does wonderful work for soldiers and other servicemen and women both directly and through its support of other service charities.
Bryn Parry served for ten years in The Royal Green Jackets before leaving the army in 1985 to become a cartoonist. He is the author and illustrator of nine books and his company, Bryn Parry Studios produce a wide range of gift products which can be seen at www.brynparrystudios.com
Emma Parry has coped with being married to Bryn for 26 years and since 1985 has been fully involved with running their business. Apart from book-keeping (not her strong point!) she has done pretty much every job going and now concentrates on sourcing products for Bryn's designs. They have three children in their twenties and their son has just started his military training at Sandhurst.
Godfrey Tilney MBE, the Appeal Coordinator, has recently retired from a full career in the Army. With personal experience of the excellent medical and rehabilitation support provided during 3 months of treatment at Headley Court, and with a son currently on his third operational tour in Iraq in successive years, he sees the Help for Heroes appeal as highly relevant, timely and extremely important.
