Pardon my ignorance, but I was looking at some photos on the RTR website of a parade in front of the Queen. It dawned on me that the officers were not wearing their dress berets and hackles. So I looked at the files of the other ranks and noted that they, too, did not have the dress beret and Hackle. It was a "foot" parade, so there was no excuse because of mounting vehicles.
Would someone please enlighten me as to if and when the dress beret and hackle was phased out. It was such a unique form of headdress it left the rest of the army standing; especially the officers' woolly beret with gold around the sweatband. And the high left side of the ORs beret with that cardboard scaffolding...

I can't remember the exact date but I know we were still wearing it in 1978, it was a decision made by the RTR Council! ISTR the orficers beret being nicknamed the 'Poodle' but I think the correct name was Aristakran and was the idea of one of the CO's wives! You'll be pleased to know that the OR's beret and hackle was retained by the 'Jukebox Troop'!

I think you may find Soprano old mate that the idea of the Poodle was by Mrs Grantham, wife of Col same. Would this fit into the approx. time of the birth of the Poodle? alf

Alfie I did hear that it was Mrs Grantham's idea but ISTR the 'Poodle' being introduced much earlier than her husband's tenure as CO (65-67)...............could be wrong!
