Few more B Sqn Remites...................... The first blerk would be the 'Tiffy' who been attached to the 'Hereford Walking Club' at some stage, didn't he lecture 'Bumble on survival skills and showed them how to knock up a little baccy tin with loadsa useful stuff in it such as fish hooks, cottonwool, condoms and crushed oxo cubes, which he'd done in a vice! Of course the other one is Jeff Cobby!

Thats the one IIRC he carried about 3 on him, seem to remember one he opened was a right mess of gooo as whatever was inside had melted and stuck everything together. He wasn't to impressed with all the laughter!!!!!! Second one for the life of me I cant remember his name but yours rings a bell and didn't he spend his life on the ARV.

Hey vmecha and sapper, I managed to get in after a threat of disclosure that must have embarrassed someone at the top! one of sappers threads mentioned Taff breaking his back in Armagh. He was in a Lightweight and I'm pretty sure Toddy was also slightly injured in the crash. Someone else was crushed and killed as it rolled.I remember going to see Taff in a local hospital. He was in plaster from his arse upward and couldn't turn his head. He was blind in one eye and couldn,t see us as he lay on his back so we had to shuffle round the bed to his good side! Just before he went home and when he was walking again but still in a body cast, he came into Gough and a few of us took the piss by walking in extended line behind him everywhere he went!! Happy days.
The reason he had the accident in the first place was the rush to support our sunken Recovery vehicle. Sgt Hipkiss had us go out to rescue a local farmers sinking tractor in a field along some obscure back country lane in our AEC? recce vehicle.Either Cooperman or Mick Dutton driving, can't remember which. I was riding shotgun and we had a red haired sergeant along with us,(the one who was shagging the Blonde with a squint behind the bar) The Reccy vehicle sunk into a ditch on the somewhat less than substantial tarmacced road and all attempts at self recovery just widened the ditch! There was a cottage on the lane and we ended up embedded in it's perimeter hedge 50 yards further down the ditch from where we started, listing to port at about 30 degrees. Red Leader decided to send our escort vehicle back to Gough as we had no radio and cell phones hadn,t been invented! As far as I remember there wasn't another recce vehicle available as they were all involved in removing burnt out booby trapped cars from the border at Crossmaglen. HQ sent out Taff and co to guard the AEC in the Lightweight and in their haste to escape the Mundane lifestyle of the Barracks (and presumably the Mad Bewigged Cooks lamentable Culinary Skills) their Landy left the road and overturned on a banking. Cooper/Dutton and I were left all night in the listing cab jumping nervously at every rustle and creak in the Stygian darkness of the Night. At about 0100 the next morning we heard someone staggering past and scraping along the road. When we wiped and peered out of the condensation clouded side windows(Couldn,t use the engine heat due to listing) there was absolutely nothing! We both clambered hastily out of the truck and, calling on the endless months of painstaking Military training embedded into our youthful sinewy bodies and programmed into our receptive brains back in Bordon Camp, we leaned our SLR's against the truck and lit up! An hour later we were back in the truck when we heard the unexplained noise again this time accompanied by a strange yet somehow familiar rustling and chinking sound and an Irish Aire mouthed breathlessly by someone who was not afraid to reveal his lack of musical training to complete strangers! An almost metallic thud close to the vehicle and the sibillant advice to "enjoy that boys" had us racing once more into the night with alacrity borne of trepidation! The Night Visitor had disappeared once more into the enveloping blackness of the night. The AEC cab light which had blinded us to the passing stranger revealed, in it's dim glow, a mysterious package beside the cab! Remembering the Incident outside Gough Barracks Gates when the greasy parcel had been dropped in the night and the ATO had cleared out all the houses opposite while he blew it up with Goliath or whatever that remote tanky thing was called, we were reluctant to approach as you might imagine. Fortunately the ethereal rays from the cab sparkled onto what appeared to be a shiny Smiths Crisps label on top of what was revealed as an open cardboard box. As the MOD had not seen fit to feed us since the previous afternoon and growing lads, as you are aware, need sustinance, we threw caution to the winds and dipped in. Imagine our surprise when removal of the lifesaving bags revealed 4 bottles of the finest local beverage beneath. Just as the Goliath incident had ended with ATO exploding a bag of sausages, this one also ended happily. At Dawn a bunch of local farmers, presumably alerted by our Mystery Benefactor, arrived and commenced to dig us out and not long after a reccy truck appeared with escort and army photographer to finish the job after destroying 20 yards of the road surface with the rear anchor blade! I don,t know what happened to the tractor we had been sent out to recover as we never went back to finish the job. You might be asking what happened to the 3 striper while all this was happening? Well he had wangled a billet in the cottage the previous afternoon and was blissfully unaware of anything until we woke him at dawn! I have copies of the Photographs which were destined for some Army publication and I'll see if I can dig them out.

A good account NS, Jim Hammel was the Sgt, he and I were not the best of buddies. He and the Buckwig didn't send Christmas cards to each other either. I was down to drive the lightweight that day but the guy who did and subsequently died changed places 'cos he hadn't been out of camp for a while and was going stir... shit my bags when I heard what had happened...

Is vmecha the sleepless one or were you up late? Was Jim Hamill REME or Tanks? and who was the unfortunate Lightweight driver? Who was driving my AEC, Cooperman or Mick Dutton? The passage of 35 years plays havoc with the grey matter!! I'll try to find my pics. They may solve the AEC driver conundrum. I wonder if sapper knows anything? Regards NS
