I was a radio op. on the Tp Ldrs tank(Ivor Fairney) about 1966 11 Tp CSqdn and we spent most of the time broken down in the aptly named 'conqueror wood) George Dobson

How long was this beast in service for then? Not many of you seemed to like it, was it as bad as everybody says?

Couldn't aggree more Tanky. It was a bitch to drive but the kick it gave you with all that power and sheer size was worth it. Even better fun was flicking the ignition switch, letting the engine override and then switch it back on again, the resulting BANG was worth it. Ahh memories.

As operater on the conq at least we were spared the fumes after we fired a round due to the auto ejection gear.It was chronic on the cent and I remember keeping the pistol port open to get some fresh air.Happy days!!

spot on with the ig/switch alfredo that bang made even the best run for cover i even saw one guy drop in the prone position i thought he had dropped dead utill he got up and threw a brick at me.that was when i was in 5 rtr i drove away but he found me in the sqn bar later i was quite happy to accept his ivitationto to go to the gym with him after which i fully understood the terms 7 bells beat and crap out of you,i still have the scars to prove it.the moral of the story is make sure you know the person who you go to the gym with,in my case i had gone with a guy called jimmy wiston middle weight champ of the 5th.oh well you cant win em all but the 2 days in the med centre did me good and gave me time to get over the concusion he had inflicted on me.Happy days.

Greentanky,I'm sure that somewhere you mentioned the name of one Ivor Fearny. Wasn't he the subaltern that brought one of the first Mini's to Detmold and got the mother of all Bollockings for racing it around the barracks. I'm sure Cobra 19 will also remember that. ;D

You're right Alf.Ivor's favourite stunt was to wait until we'd finished with the washdown with plenty of water about and then come through the washdown area at about 40 mph doing handbrake turns. One time he did 2 complete 190 degree turns. He was always getting bollocked for something. He found my phone no. from somewhere and rang me up a few months ago after 40 odd years to see if I fancied going out for a drink.I tactfully declined.
