FEBRUARY 2024 BRANCH MEETING.
19 people sat down with another 13 linked in via Zoom. A very credible attendence figure as February traditonally has the lowest attendance figure of any branch meeting.
There were no Green Fields to announce regarding branch members but it was noted that Arthur Abraham & Eric Harding both ex 1 RTR and known to a number of branch members had recently passed away.
We welcomed a new member, Ned Kelly ex 2 RTR who lives locally.
Minutes of the November 2023 branch meeting were read out with no comments or queries.
There was a recap of branch activity which included the December social, the RBL Poppy stand in the Dolphin shopping centre, Remembrance Sunday in Bournemouth, Poole & Weymouth, the RTR march to the Cenotaph, the Not Forgotten Xmas lunch held in Poole and the 2024 Ladies Lunch.
A vote of thanks was given to Dave Roberts and Mike Everton for their outstanding organisation and execution of this event. 115 people were sat down for what was another tremendous success story.
Forthcoming activity- Names were required for the RTR sponsored Church Service & Curry lunch at Bovington on Sunday 17th March.
A show of hands was taken to gauge the interest in attending the annual Exercise Tiger Remembrance service at Slapton Sands in Devon. We counted 13 hands so we will be attending as a branch. It was agreed that branch funds would cover the cost of the minbus hire and individuals would pay for their overnight accommodation in Paignton the night before. Overnight accommodation for a Dorset to next door Devon trip? remember we are not 18 years old anymore and of course "anyone can rough it"
The RTR march to the Cenotaph was confirmed as 17th November and members were asked their views on the suitability of the Barley Mow pub as the location of the post parade gathering. The view was to dump the Barley Mow and relocate to the Union Jack Club (UJC) or a venue within walking distance of the UJC.
Members were invited to bid for tickets for Founders Day at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
We were informed that our three Korean War vets will be meeting HM The King (Cancer diagnosis permitting) later this year.
Members were informed that the RTR App and veterans ID cards are now available.
Members have been asking on social media about D-Day 80 events this year? The branch secretary confirmed that the branch would as usual participate in the US Memorial Day service at Weymouth, this is a D Day event albeit a week earlier than the D Day anniversary. On 6th June the branch will participate at the RBL service at the D Day memorial on Poole Quay followed immediately by another service at the US D Day memorial also on Poole Quay. He also confirmed that the guest speaker for the 4th June branch meeting will be Lt Col (ret) Gareth Davies whose presentation will be D Day themed. The secretary said he was unaware of any other specific D-Day 80 events by local authorities or Military organisations.
It was mentioned that the Weymouth Veterans Hub had a shortfall in it's funding and was looking for donations. The comitte said they would investigate and discuss this at the next meeting.
The longer than usual branch meeting then closed
