NOVEMBER 2023
37 people sat down for the November branch meeting with another 25 on Zoom. 62 in total, a record! OK, 4 were here for Bill Stebbings painting presentation and we had 4 members from the Royal Marines Association there just for David Willeys presentation, but still, 62 absolutely fantastic.
We got through the normal bits and pieces at a quick pace so we could concentrate on the two main events. First, we saw Caroline Stebbing receive a painting of her late father "Bill Stebbing from the artist Nel Brooks. The likeness was uncanny, it was as if Bill was staring back at us, it was understandably well received.
We then had the presentation by David Willey, the Curator of the Tank Museum. David's presentation was about the Tank Museum's involvement with the film "Fury" and we learned an awful lot about what went on behind the scenes. It was gripping stuff and far too much info to be detailed on here. But a few small snippets!
For the battle scene with the tiger tank, the route the tiger took was on a specially laid concrete track which was then covered over with a thin layer soil and mud to hide the fact. This to prevent the Tiger from throwing a track on the muddy field.
For the shots of the Sherman interior? a mock up 25% larger than the real thing was created. The shell had removable portions so that a camera could poke in and get good shots. They would then replace the portion, remove another and get more shots from a different angle.
Just before a weekend break the Sherman crew (which included two Tank Museum Staff) were discussing their priorities for the forthcoming weekend, a tank museum chap told Brad Pitt "I'm back down to Dorset, I must get my car MOT'd, it's very important. Brad said I have to take Angelina (Jolie) Shopping in Paris, that's very important too! How the other half live!
A top quality presentation from a top quality presenter.
