12 members present for the July 2019 branch meeting
A minutes silence was held for Keith Coyne and Stephen Smith both ex 1 RTR. Keith died in June 2019 as a result of an accident, it was the 30th anniversary of the death of Stephen, who was murdered by the Provisional IRA, who in 1989 placed an IED under his car outside his Married Quarter in Hannover, Germany.
The Chairman gave a recap on the branch's graveside tribute to S/Sgt Watson, Tank Corps, on the 100th anniversary of his death. The successful participation in the Weymouth Armed Forces Day Parade was also highlighted. It was confirmed that the Parade for 2020 will be on Sunday 21 June.
Branch Members were invited to a wreath laying ceremony at the grave of John Howell, a branch member who died in April 2019.
Members were asked to put their names forward to the secretary if they wished to be included in the Arras 80 trip to France next year. This branch has already booked our coach, so the trip is on, it's just a question of how many?
We were reminded about the Branch BBQ on Saturday 19th August. We were also reminded that there is no branch meeting in August. The next meeting is in September which is also the AGM. It was announced that the Association link Warrent Officer from the Royal Tank Regiment will be attending the September meeting, it seems likely that he will be bringing some soldiers from the Regiment with him. Members were informed that we have an unexpected place available on the trip to the National Memorial Arboretum in August. This is to attend the commemeration ceremony for Op Banner 50. For the youngsters? Op Banner was the name given to the British Army deployment in support of the civil authorities in Northern Ireland from 1969.
Details, including the menu and costs for the Annual Ladies Lunch in January 2020 were made available.
The Chairman gave details of the branch participation in the funeral of Lt Dowler ex RTR. We were able to despatch members and the standard ay short notice.
The meeting was then closed and the Chairman introduced the guest speaker, Lt Col Paul Macro RTR. Paul has just written a book about a small incident in Afghanistan in 1919 during the 3rd Afghan war. His grandfather was involved in the action. It involved an RAF aircraft being shot down by Tribesmen and the race to recover them before the tribesmen did. Want to know more?
