17 bums on seats for August 2018 meeting.
Members were reminded of the Branch BBQ being held on Saturday. We were also reminded about the Battle of Britain service in September, which is something branch members attend every year. Members were informed that we now have an appropriate wreath for use when we mark the 100th anniversary of the death of a lone Canadian soldier at Poole Cemetary in November. It was confirmed that a branch update has been sent to HHQ for inclusion in the 2018 "Tank Mag" . The branch was shown the e-mail from the Regimental Secretary regarding the commemorative paving stones in the home towns of the 4 Tank Corps VC winners in WWI.
We then moved on to the main subject of the meeting, the Ladies Lunch in January. Our main function is always held in January because it is felt that there are simply too many functions in November (Cambrai) and December (Xmas), and as there is not a branch meeting in January it all sort of fits into place. Dave Roberts & Mick Everton had agreed to organise it, and organise it they have. A new location (Sandbanks Hotel) which will have easier access for those who may be less mobile. The menu is already available and the entertainment booked. The plan is to get it out to the troops earlier this year so people can plan in advance and hopefully get a bumper turnout.
It was then the turn of the guest speaker, who was none other than our own Kev Coughlin. Kev talked about his main hobby, air rifle/pistol shooting! Forget about those old .177 or .22 old fashioned spring load jobs for our youth, the world has moved on, and how? He brought almost his entire armoury, the air weapons of today have evolved because of the ban on full bore weapons following the Dunlane incident in Scotland. They are exact replica's of real weapons except they are air weapons and cannot be converted to the real thing. He started off with pistols from the old American west, with the Colt Peacemaker and the Remington, they weigh the same as the real thing as well as looking like it. Then it was the turn of the Winchester rifle, all that was missing was a Stetson and a "Yeehaa" cry. into a more modern era and we had the British Webley revolver, a German Luger and another German WWII pistol whose name escapes me. The 9mm Browning was present as was the Walther PKK (James Bond) and the daddy of them all, A Magnum (and I'm not talking Ice Creams here) When examining this piece, someone (not too far from here) had to do it didn't they, A cry of "well punk make my day" echoed around the room!
Then out comes an SA80 (I kid you not) and a German WWII SMG and then a fully fledged snipers rifle with telescopic sights. All that was missing was a "Johnny Seven" and a Carl Gustav. The place looked like Al Capones office!!
Everyone had a good look at the kit he had brought, and a good play. We all enjoyed it and it was good to see Kev again after a long time away.
