17 members were present for the first meeting of 2018. A minutes silence was held for Ray Mollinson, who died whilst on holiday in Spain recently. Ray was a staunch member of the branch and had served in the Rhine Staff Band. Minutes of the November 2017 branch meeting were carried. Minutes of the RTRA AGM held in November 2017 were available for mambers to read.
Comments and feedback (all positive) were given regarding Cambrai 100. Comments and feedback regarding the January Ladies lunch were given. the only negative was that the stairs leading to the function room were difficult for some members, a new location is being investigated. The Branch participation in the 100th anniversary of the death of Cpl Brookes MM at Weymouth Cemetery on 2nd February 2018 was outlined to members ( see photo). The branch was reminded that we would be laying a wreath at Gloucester Road Cemetary in Bournemouth, on 18th March 2018, to commemerate the death 100 years ago of Lt Lawson, Tank Corps, who is buried there.
Members were informed that there was an invite to attend the annual 8 RTR Bournemouth function on 24th March 2018. This function is always held the night before the RTRA Church Service & Curry Lunch at Bovington the following day. Following on from that, those present were informed that names for the Church Service / Curry lunch needed to be with the secretary by the next branch meeting.
It was announced that we plan to lay a wreath at the ANZAC memorial in Weymouth on ANZAC day, 25th April 2018. Bob Darnell who lives in Weymouth has agreed to lay the wreath
Members were informed of the "Operation Tiger" memorial service at Slapton Sands in Devon on 29th April 2018. This is administered by the Plymouth Branch RTRA, at least 4 branch members will be in attendance and the branch standard will be present.
It was confirmed that the Weymouth Veterans Day parade is on Sunday 24th June 2018.
Details were given about the "just giving" online appeal to get a headstone placed on the unmarked grave of a former Northamptonshire Yeomanry & 1 RTR soldier who emigrated to and died in Western Australia.
