19 members were present for the July meeting. Dave Orman provided feedback on his attendence at the "Not Forgotten Association" Garden Party held at Buckingham Palace. He described it as one of the most memorable days of his life. Dave also represented the branch on the Solent boat trip, again organised by the "Not Forgotton Association".
The guest speaker was Col (Ret) John Longman. He first of all mentioned a Not Forgotton Association scheme to provide 32in TV's for the needy. He continued by setting out details of the provisional programme foe the Cambrai Centenary 19th-26th November 2017.These details await confirmation. Col Longman is the editor of the Regimental Journal and gave a talk concerning the history and future of the "Tank Mag". It was started as a monthly magazine in April 1919, funded bu subscribtions and no copies for individual soldiers. This was reduced to 4 copies per annum in December 1975 until 1999 when it was reduced to 3 copies a year. In 2011 it was produced in colour for the first time but was further reduced to 2 copies per year. It is produced at cost for serving soldiers and at subscription rates for others. The cost has been fixed at £14 since 1994 with a print run of 1414. The future is unsure as the powers that be look to balance cost against service. It is thought that there will be no change until after the Cambrai Centenary celebrations in 2017, but all options will be considered after that.
The Chairman then thanked Col Longman for his presentation.
Note: A Production run of only 1414 copies of the Tank Mag? say 400 copies for serving soldiers, that means only 1000 copies to veterans. Even if we start at 1969 with the reduction to Four Regiments, just how many ex RTR veterans are out there? the answer is thousands! With numerous RTR pages on various social media outlets, it seems a huge number remain interested, so why are they not subscribing to the Tank Mag? If you are one of them, what has stopped you subscribing to the Regimental Journal? If another 1000 people paid £14 a year and received their 2 copies any concerns for the future might disappear. The days of Regimental Funds being available to cover various costs are long gone. So my plea is, Please subscibe to the Regimental Journal, pay for and get your own copy and help preserve the future of the "Tank Mag". And before you ask? yes, I DO subscribe.
