Mac McKanny who passed away on 14th March 2014 served in the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars during the Normandy Campaign in 1944. The Hussars were disbanded and the soldiers sent to other regiments as battlefield casualty replacements. "Mac" went to 3 RTR and as a non gunner was of course put in the gunners seat of a Sherman Firefly, 20 minutes later a Panther tank rolled into view and Mac took it out with his first shot. Mac served with 3 RTR for the rest of the war. He later emigrated to the USA but returned to Christchurch Dorset a number of years ago. He was a staunch member of the Bournemouth & Poole branch of the Association. He will be sadly missed, a real character. RIP Mac.
