14 members including a new recruit were present for the March 2012 meeting. It was confirmed that we will be joining up with the London Branch for the trip to Cambrai in November. The have got a grant from the "Not Forgotten Association" (see Feb 2012) which means transport to and from Cambrai plus 2 nights Bed and Breakfast will cost us just £75 each.
It was agreed that the branch should donate £30 to the Not Forgotten Association following their visit to us in February.
Names were taken for the RTR sponsored Church service at Bovington on 25th March. This is followed by a Curry lunch at the Officers Mess. Due to a clash with the Diamond Jubilee extra long weekend, it was to decided to cancel the June branch meeting, normal service will resume in July.
The proposed visit by the branch to the CIS (signal) School at Bovington is on, date for July will be confirmed shortly. Members were informed that volume IV of the history of the RTR 1976-2017 is about to be started. All former members of the regiment are being urged to send in material..
It was agreed that we would investigate the possibility of a branch weekend in the midlands with the aim of visiting the National Arboretum.
Confirmation that the guest speaker for April is Capt Daz Logan 1 RTR
There being no further business the chairman closed the meeting and introduced the guest speaker, Major Fred Reid 9th/12th Royal Lancers, QM Royal Wessex Yeomanry (RWY).
Fred was not a new face to some of the younger members, Dave "Rosie" Larcombe ex 2/3 RTR knew him as did "LP" our new recruit ex 2 RTR. Graham Collins was on the same crew commanders course as he, and Fred and I were gunnery instructors together at JLR. In fact Fred was the last ever 9/12L gunnery instructor at JLR, now where have I heard that before?
Fred gave a short talk on his career before telling us about the Yeomanry. The tactical flash of the yeomanry shows a broken spur, which stems from the Devon Yeomanry (warhorse) being turned into infantry after initial heavy losses during WW1 and the officers breaking their spurs in disgust at this happening.
RHQ & A Sqn (Dorset Yeomanry) are based at Bovington, A Sqn are the armoured delivery Sqn and would deliver replacement vehicles in time of war. B Sqn (Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) are based at Old Sarum ( former RAC Para Sqn base) near Salisbury. C Sqn (Royal Gloucestershire Hussars) are at Cirencester, and D Sqn (Royal Devon Yeomanry) Barnstable & Paignton. B,C and D Sqn's are tasked to provide battlefield casualty replacements to CR2 regiments. RWY are currently part of 43 Wessex Bde but will soon become part of 12 Mech Bde based at Bulford. they will "realign" with Kings Royal Hussars and Light Dragoons and as such will be the first port of call for these two regiments when extra manpower is required for any future operations. Also their current war roles may change in the near future as we may not have any spare CR2 to deliver or available for battlefield casualty replacements.
Fred's talk was very well received and a most enjoyable evening was had.
