15 members were present for the November meeting and one guest, John Parkinson, from Yeovil, a former member of 2 RTR ( he left in 1972 whilst 2 RTR were at Bovington) was visiting relatives in Poole and decided to pay us a visit. He was of course made very welcome and it was pleasing to know that he had found out about us via our website.
The loyal toast was followed by the toast to the regiment and then the green fields. A nil return in this section is what we like,
The minutes of the October meeting were carried and it was then down to business. Nigel Lewis passed on Jeff Lyman’s best wishes; Jeff is now in Yorkshire after his departure from Dorset.
Menus for the January ladies lunch were distributed and copies will be sent to those who were not present. It was agreed to use branch funds to purchase raffle tickets for both the December social and ladies lunch. Details of the 8 RTR March 2012 Bournemouth function were made available, branch members have been invited to this function.
The cost of a self-drive mini bus for Cambrai 2012 seems to be affordable and this option remains open.
There was no further business and so the Chairman closed the meeting and introduced the guest speakers.
WO1 M Towel, RSM 2 RTR and WO1 C Halkerston 2 RTR, GSM Bovington, combined to produce a magnificent power point presentation on the recent 2 RTR tour of duty in Afghanistan. We were shown maps covering the area 2 RTR operated in and many photos’ showing the different types of ground they had to negotiate. The merits of Mastiff and Warthog were amply demonstrated by the fact that numerous attacks by insurgents on both vehicles did not result in fatalities. It really was a very in depth and detailed presentation which was both enjoyed and appreciated by the “old gits” present. It was only fair then that both speakers won prizes on the raffle.
A very successful meeting.
