12 members were present for the meeting. The loyal toast and toast to the regiment were followed by a nil return in the green fields section.
There was an update on travel arrangements for Cambrai 2012. We are awaiting a response from the Bovington branch regarding a joint coach in order to keep costs down.
Members were informed of the loss of the CBRN role for 1 RTR
Due to a clash with a darts match, the October meeting will be held in the annex located upstairs at RBL club in Parkstone. The same clash will occur in December and a decision on our response will be made at the October meeting.
The guest speaker was then introduced. Lt Col (Ret) Stephen May the Regimental Colonel had agreed to attend to talk about the situation regarding 1 RTR.
First of all he gave a rundown on 2 RTR and their very successfull tour in Afghanistan.
In regards to 1 RTR and the loss of the CBRN role, he told us that we had been confident in holding on to the role, but that when additional cuts in army numbers ( in addition to those announced) were disclosed victory turned to defeat. He stated that the RTR will continue to fight for the retention of both regiments in the "new order".
The new order will be announced when the "Carter Review" reports in October 2011. The main hope for the RAC appears to be that 5 combat brigades will need 5 Armd Recce regiments and 5 Armoured regiments, which is what we have now, Since World War II the RTR (because of it's size) has suffered more disbandments/amalgamations than all other RAC units and this is the main argument for retaining both regiments this time and passing any reductions to the cavalry.
There are lots of theory's but no one knows for sure (even at the highest level) what "carter" is going to recommend. All the RTR can do is fight it's corner within the RAC and do it's bit to fight the RAC corner within the overall picture.
A tense wait for everyone.
