As you may know Ivan aka (flav) is waiting for a transplant even now he is still making plans for a charity day with a swimming stally. I will post more details today once Ive spoken to fl av anybody who would like to help him email me or fl av and we will send you a support sponsor pack .
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to you to try and raise funds via donations on behalf of New Start Charity at the Transplant Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester. I am currently on the waiting list myself for a lung transplant and due to my health am unable to raise funds by normal ways, such as sponsored walks, runs, and jumping out of planes!
I am therefore writing to local businesses to ask if you would consider making a donation towards the Charity and the Unit via myself to add to the running total I have already collected. I can then make a specific request as to how the funds are used, eg: such as specialist equipment, special beds or put towards research to help many others in the same situation as myself.
Although the Transplant Unit is based in Manchester many people are unaware that this is their ‘local’ Unit as it covers the whole of the North West region – it is where you go to when your nearest hospital has done all they can for you. It is a Centre of Excellence and one that offers hope and a second chance at life to many people like myself.
I am very keen to help raise funds for the Unit; this is an area new to me as I am normally the one giving to Charity. All the money raised goes directly to the Unit and is not lost in admin as often happens with some other charities. Please find enclosed some information on the Charity and also some information on my illness and why I need a transplant.
I hope we can count on your support and look forward to hearing from you. If you feel you could give a donation to the Charity and would like publicity for your company I would be pleased to take part in any way I can.
Yours hopefully,
Mr Ivan Flavell

Wythenshawe Hospital Transplant Fund
The Past
The Charity was set up as a support organisation in 1986 to fund the first transplants in the North West and to assist in funding the development of a transplant centre for heart and lung transplantation. In 1995, it was formally recognised as a charity with The Charity Commissioners and a private company limited by guarantee not having a share capital was formed. There are 10 trustees from various backgrounds - medical staff, patients and business supporters
Local support groups in Horwich, North Wales and the Wirral, South Cheshire & North Staffordshire, Stockport and Ashton under Lyne and Liverpool have been formed to raise money locally by fund raising events and feed donations to the main charity.
The main objectives of the charity are " ... the relief of sickness and the preservation and protection of good health by the provision of financial assistance to the programme of heart and lung transplantation and future clinical developments in heart and lung surgery at Wythenshawe Hospital ..."
Over the years the charity has raised funds in the order of £7.5 million to provide the following at Wythenshawe Hospital:-
· Funding the first 50 transplants
· Providing one third of the cost of building the transplant centre
· Building four bungalows for accommodation of transplant patients prior to returning home
· Building and equipping the Transplant Laboratory
· Funding the Laboratory for three years
· Funding a range of research projects
· Funding the salaries of three clinicians for three years
· Financing the building of £1.9 million Jim Quick Transplant Ward and six bedsits
· Providing new furniture and beds for the Jim Quick Ward
The Present
Biopsy Laboratory
The Biopsy Laboratory in the Transplant Centre was equipped with second hand equipment when it was opened in 1992. The equipment is at the end of its useful life and spares are difficult to come by for some of the equipment. The cost of re equipping with the latest and best is around £150,000. The Charity has agreed to fund this and ordering of equipment is underway and a start on the refurbishment will begin in January 2007.
Artificial Hearts
The main problem with heart transplants is the shortage of donors and the difficulty of finding donors when they are most needed. Regretfully, a sizeable number of patients die before a suitable heart becomes available or they become unstable very quickly. For these patients, in particular, the availability of mechanical hearts is truly life saving. With the support of the Charity, Mr Nizar Yonan (The Director of Transplants) along with a fully trained team of surgeons, physicians, technicians and nurses has been able to offer this life saving facility to patients at the transplant unit in Wythenshawe Hospital for the past year with a successful outcome.
Bronchoscopy Equipment
Thanks to the Charity and its donors - the lung transplant team have been able to purchase new state of the art videobronchoscopy equipment to the tune of £50,000. This new equipment allows the ability to record pictures of the patients airways which helps to follow changes in the transplanted lungs more objectively. It also allows patients to watch the procedure on a TV screen whilst it is happening. According to Dr Leonard it has been a great success and makes life a lot easier for all those concerned.
The Future
The Million Pound Challenge
Our challenge has been to raise £1,000,000 to fund the purchase of a Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Scanner (CMRS). Many people will know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the UK with over 124,000 cases per year. Up to 50% of patients die at time of first presentation, and without prior warning. In the USA and most of Europe, there are 40 CMR Scanners per million of the population, and yet in the UK there is only one per 8 million of population. This fact alone says so much about how far behind at times we are with our services in the UK.
Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Scanners allow accurate, reproducible measurement of the size and function of the heart muscle with no radiation dose. In effect it allows a clear vision of the inner structure of the heart muscle to see scars (as a result of heart attacks) and other areas of abnormality that cannot be visualised by other techniques and is completely non-invasive.
CMRS provides more information than CT scans without the inherent risk of radiation and contract materials. This is particularly important in babies and young patients, those with kidney problems or those needing repeat screening.
The Scanner will be housed in the new Cardiac building which will be finished early 2008. Only one year away.
Gift Aid
Gift Aid is a government scheme which offers advantageous tax treatments for charities. If you make a donation under the scheme then you simply tell us and we do the rest. The benefit to the charity is that we can claim a tax credit which means for each £100 donated under the scheme the charity receives approximately £28 from the Chancellor of the Exchequer. If you are a 40% tax payer you can in addition claim tax relief on your donation which reduces the actual cost of £100 donation to £77.
Donors
We endeavour to raise the profile of organ donation whenever we can as without these, transplantation could not go ahead. There is always a shortage of donors as it is something most people want to do but never quite get round to doing it. Please remember it does save lives.
