Geoff Welcome to fearnaught. When you left Egypt did you initially sail aboard Theseus to Malta then onward to the UK by Empire Baltic? Also can you remember which of the Fred's was the Loader on your tank? The reason I ask is my father served with C Sqn, 9th Troop and I am trying to put their exploits together
Cheers Paul

Compo
Oct 29, 2009 11:36:35 GMT
Post by 32gbpadfal on Oct 29, 2009 11:36:35 GMT
I was wondering if any of you can remember the compo of the 50's. Up to now all I can find is the Tea was loose and used to be thrown straight into the BV with the sugar and and cans of condensed milk, left to stew for a while and then cups dipped in and passed around the crew.
Margarine and biscuits brown were also there.
Some main meals that I have found were Mutton Scotch style, which does sound revolting and Irish stew but they were not to be liked that much.
Was coffee issued I presume not as it was fairly expensive in those days?
I know that when on ops you also got Cigs and chocolate issued was the chocolate in the metal tins with 4 bars per tin and as hard as bullets. Remember eating it as a kid and did the cigs issued come in 20's or 10's?
Also found some of the cigs issued were woodbine, navy cut, services and darts.
Any help would be much appriciated

Below is a bad picture of a grat pattern for the 20pdr. I am happy with the aim left/right markings and the aim on static marks however what I would like to know was there a series of these in the sight pertaining to different ranges or when the gunner was told a range in the fire order did by turning a lever to a scibed range make it smaller or larger? Kiwi or Greentanky any help would be appriciated

Now very confused!!!!!!!! George I can see your point but if they put a letter in front which was changed daily that would sort out the confusion of 3 troops using the number one but hey I dont know. A3B sadly This picture may put paid to your theory as the tank is my old mans with his driver Tpr Purkiss having a fag. Unless the number painted on the side was used for loading, who knows but i have pictures of the troop which goes 1 2Lt Hetherington, 1A Sgt Jock Lumsden and 1B Cpl Bob Brewer although some pictures of A Sqn show no such markings except for the H and Black line around the turret. I am inclined to go with both of you on the Sqns having a number to indicate each Sqn followed by 1,2,3,4 indicating the troop and A,B indicating Sgt or Cpl. S54 what is the 1/2 bit at the front of each C/S indicator?

All depends what Sqdn you want. 'A' starts with a 1,'B' with a 2 and 'C' with a 3.e.g.Say you want Tp Sgt 10 Tp C Sqdn that would be c/s 32A or Tp Ldr 7 Tp B Sqdn would be c/s 23 and so on.Hope that helps. Greentanky now I am confused, I have photo's of my dads troop in Suez which was 9th Troop C Sqn and they had 1 troop leader, 1A Sgt Jock Lumsden, and 1B which was the old mans tank so I thought 1 to 4 troops in all the Sqns were numbered that way. Sgt Jacknik was in A Sqn and his C/S was 4A unless they only used this method during the war? Also what would be the OC, 2IC, SQMS and SSM'S C/S be? In todays C/S they would be OB, OC, 23A, 33A Cheers Paul

Pardon my ignorance, but I was looking at some photos on the RTR website of a parade in front of the Queen. It dawned on me that the officers were not wearing their dress berets and hackles. So I looked at the files of the other ranks and noted that they, too, did not have the dress beret and Hackle. It was a "foot" parade, so there was no excuse because of mounting vehicles. Would someone please enlighten me as to if and when the dress beret and hackle was phased out. It was such a unique form of headdress it left the rest of the army standing; especially the officers' woolly beret with gold around the sweatband. And the high left side of the ORs beret with that cardboard scaffolding... Around the early 70's but S54 will give you the exact date.

Hi all,
I am trying to help Doreen & Cyril Bliss track down Steve & Harriet O'Neill of the Third. I know that Steve served while the Regiment were in Woofers and Doreen and Cyril lost touch when he had moved to Derby.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Look at the 6 RTR Nominal roll about 1956 further down the list and you'll find Sgt. Hardy in B Sqdn.It reads '4536741 Sgt Hardy R' Cheers Greentanky I missed him but no trace of the Trooper but looking at the type of vegitation I presume it was taken in germany so the Tpr could have left by then. I presume you didn't come across him when you joined them in Lybia?

Cheers Rtando I knew about Chieftains but wondered if it was the same with cents. Do you know how it would elevate and depress with the main armament?

Can anyone help it would be much appreciated!!!!
I know that during the build up to Suez whilst the Sixth were in Malta they built a small gallery range at Ta Qali airfield for the crews to practice their engagement techniques using a .22 kit to simulate main armament firing.
My question is where was it mounted, was it placed into the COAX as it follows the main armament? Was it strapped to the main gun much like Ron Aquilina’s gunnery simulator or attached to the tank in some other method?

Excellent pic, what a difference 20 odd years make, yesterdays "my desk" is now the personal work space. You could not get so friendly now as you have to have at least 1m between each personal work space. The phone would more than likely be on speaker, you most defiantly would not have an ashtray on the desk. The closest external smoking area would be about ten minutes away in an attempt to prevent you from smoking in you ten minute rest period. SHEF would prevent you from having the radio as you have a coat hanger for an aerial which is an illegal modification of electrical item and you could only have one with a letter of authority with it being placed on the electrical register and PAT tested on a biannual basis. As for the lack of a computer and all the paraphernalia that must now come with it, anti glare screen if required, fully adjustable work area chair not the classroom chair next to you, wrist rest for the Qwerty keyboard, foot rest for those with stumpy legs and a privacy shield in front of the desk from floor (women with skirts) to chest hight to prevent people looking at your work.
And as for secretary they tend to look down their nose at you if you ask for a coffee let alone sit on your lap Christ the repercussions aren't even worth thinking about.

TOP GUN TOLD BY THE DORSET EVENING ECHO OCT 12 1991.Devastating display of tanks in action! In a devastating demonstration of firepower, 11 Troop of C Squadron, Third Royal Tank Regiment, proved they were the very best when they won the Regiment’s Top Gun competition on the Hohne ranges, Bergen, Germany. Lt Col Andrew Ridgway, Commanding Officer 3RTR.Under the command of Lt Nick Burt and with two South Dorset Soldiers – Cpl Lee Hawkins, from Poole and Tpr Pete “Lucky” Lydford, from Weymouth – the tanks from 11 Troop mopped up the prizes in fine style. A very self – assured Tpr Lydford, whose farther is a Weymouth police sergeant, won the Top Gun prize for best gunner in the competition. LOCAL LADS from left: Tpr Pete “Lucky” Lydford, from Weymouth, Tpr John Stork, from Bridport, Tpr Mark Butler, from Weymouth and Cpl Lee Hawkins, from Poole. Top Gun: Tpr Pete “Lucky” Lydford, a former Weymouth Grammer school pupil, who won the best gunner prize in the competition. Fire Power: A B Sqn Tank on the firing range. On The Road: A tank from B Sqn is move into position for the competition.Difficult.3 RTR, under the command of Lt Col Andrew Ridgway, made it a day for all the family as buses from the regiment’s base at Hemer ferried the soldiers families to Hohne for the competition. For many of the wives and children, this was their first chance to see this crack regiment in action. Queens View: Former Puddletown carnival queen Susie Cannon with her husband, Ssgt Mick Cannon. Wareham’s Own: 2Lt Darran Wayman, from D Sqn, who is from Wareham, shows Hannah & Katie Harrison over one of the tanks. At lunch time they were given a superb BBQ and the children were shown over the tanks. Lt Col Andrew Ridgway explained that the regiment were on the ranges for a training exercise and the Top Gun competition gave an edge to the soldiers performance at a difficult time as 3 RTR falls victim to government cuts next year when it will amalgamate with the 2 RT with the loss of many jobs. Old Boy: Former Hardye’s school pupil Lt Phillip Cook (left) commands Recce Tp, 3 RTR. Super Trooper: Tpr Matthew Chutter, from Dorchester, a former member of 2128 Dorchester Squadron Air Training Corps, took part in the competition. C Sqn celebrate their Sqn taking the Lead. Driving Careers: Tpr Mark “Charlie” Charles (left) from B Sqn and Tpr Mike “Spike” Hughes, driver to the RSM. Both from Weymouth. THE CHAMPIONS: C Sqn, 3 RTR.

Few more B Sqn Remites...................... The first blerk would be the 'Tiffy' who been attached to the 'Hereford Walking Club' at some stage, didn't he lecture 'Bumble on survival skills and showed them how to knock up a little baccy tin with loadsa useful stuff in it such as fish hooks, cottonwool, condoms and crushed oxo cubes, which he'd done in a vice! Of course the other one is Jeff Cobby! Thats the one IIRC he carried about 3 on him, seem to remember one he opened was a right mess of gooo as whatever was inside had melted and stuck everything together. He wasn't to impressed with all the laughter!!!!!! Second one for the life of me I cant remember his name but yours rings a bell and didn't he spend his life on the ARV.

S54 if it helps the owner of the album they moved too Quassassin Camp on the 5/6 Jan and spent the next couple of months getting manning strengths up. In June they handed in their tanks and got Grant replacements before joining 4th Armd Bde part of 7th Armd Div.
Their first task was to deploy and deal with possible counter attack after 1st and 3rd RTR had completed an attack toward Bir El Harmat. The counter attack was to have a possible enemy strength of 50 tanks.
I notice it took a bit of time for the cap badge to catch up with the men in the last 3 pictures.
I have seen that a Tpr Jones R was either missing or a POW at some stage and that Tpr G Hambleton was injured on the 10/09/44 at Cemetry Hill by either a vehicle roll over or from arty fire.
