Reunion Weekend
Once again it’s time to consider the reunion for 2008.
The hotel is booked once again for you all so come along and join in.
The hotel has agreed only a slight price increase to last year’s cost.
SO HERE WE GO.
FRIDAY
We start off in the afternoon by welcoming you all to the hotel. Today is the day to settle in and meet in the bar or café area. The Fish and Chip Supper (you do not have to order this, it is possible to order something else) will be served in the room downstairs in our own bar, which will be open from 1830hrs. Remember it will be cheaper to drink here than upstairs. The rest of the night is yours to chat away.
SATURDAY
Starts with breakfast, the rest of the day free time. The downstairs bar will be open from 183Ohrs. Dinner will be served from 193Ohrs. This year I will forward everyone a menu for the REUNION DINNER. This will give you a choice of BEEF/CHICKEN/FISH, can you please let me know nearer the time what you would like to order. After the Dinner will come the Toast followed by an update from The Regimental Guest of Honour. This will then give free time for the raffle and music to make the night go by for us all.
SUNDAY
We have the short march to The Cenotaph where a service will be held.
After the service the parade will march back to the hotel, where the
salute will be taken by the Guests of Honour, The President and
Chairman and Guests from Blackpool Council.
After the dispersal of the parade a short concert will be given in the main lounge.
All bedrooms have Private Bathrooms, TV, and tea/coffee making facilities plus telephones.
Any other cost must be paid before checkout on either Sunday or Monday. A reminder from the hotel that if you require special diets these can be provided if the hotel is informed, so can you please state
the booking form.
If you wish to make the time in Blackpool longer for a holiday please consider this. The hotel have given us a special price for Thursday and Sunday night, but will be very happy to extend this to whatever length of stay you would like. But, to get the special room all accommodation price must be made through the Association.
If you wish to ask for a sea view room, the hotel will start charging us the rate of 5.00 per person per night. This is due to the number of people requesting sea view rooms each year. Sorry about this, but it
the hotel’s decision and is their normal practice.
Please remember to state on the booking form if single beds or double beds are required, otherwise it Will be single beds allocated.
Do not worry if you get your booking form in early and you find you have to cancel right up to the day. You will not lose your deposit or balance; it will be refunded. You do not need insurance for this, the hotel have agreed to waive any charges.

BLACKPOOL MAY 2007 and MAY 2008. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE IN THE YEARS TO COME?
As you will all know by now, we have lost Padre Baines to The Green Fields which was not long after the REUNION this year.
He was always there for us.
BLACKPOOL REUNION MAY 2008.
The weekend will be as usual, the only changes will be the assembly and march off
on Sunday morning, time to be agreed.
This is because of the FUN RUN. The band has been booked ready for us.
We do have to book the band at least one year in advance.
BLACKPOOL REUNION MAY 2009.
This reunion timing and arrangements are not yet arranged. But they must start to be put into place. We need to consider what we are going to do for the REUNIONS after next year.
Each year having a band for the march to and from the Cenotaph in Blackpool costs us all a lot of money for which we do not have in the kitty.
This means that we have to add that bit extra to the hotel cost and pass around the begging bowel ie: donations and raffles.
The average cost of the band is £700.00, this is the cost of travel for them, plus greeting with coffee on arrival, the march to and from The War Memorial and back, plus the concert in the hotel afterwards. This usually only gives us about 20/30 people in the room for the concert; is it worth it? We have been very lucky with the Claremont Hotel, who for the past few years have tried hard to keep their prices down and have been able to do this again for the year 2008.
As you all know, we have always paraded outside The Claremont Hotel in Blackpool and marched to the Cenotaph where Padre Baines always held a short service and he blessed the wreaths that were laid by The Association and other Branches and private families and friends in memory of our Fallen Comrades.
At the last get-together in Blackpool, we had to change the parade due to the closing of The War Memorial and The North Promenade, for refurbishment. This meant that we had to make alternative arrangements for the parade. We were able to use the local St John’s Church in the town centre, who came to the rescue by offering the Association their Church, which we took up. Padre Baines thought that this was a very good idea and he and I met the Reverend Mike Manley plus a few others on the Saturday morning. With last minute changes agreed with Blackpool Police, we were able to change the march and the direction.
The Reverend Mike Manley has stated that we would be able use his church whenever we wished for a service and he would always help out if we asked.
On Sunday morning, along with you all, we were able to form up for those able to march and others making their own way down to the pedestrian area, where we all formed up under The Parade Marshall we marched the short distance to the church. The Reverend Mike Manley, the vicar of St John’s Church welcomed us all into his church and then left the running of the service to Padre Baines. Padre in his normal way greeted us all in his normal true colours, gave us all a very good but short service, which lasted about 30/40 minutes in total on Sunday morning. Reverend Mike later on moved the wreaths to the Military Chapel and blessed them for us.
A lot of you who attended said why do we not just have a service followed by laying of the wreaths just either inside the Church’s Military Chapel or at the War Memorial. Last year (2006) we lost a lot of money (£2500.00) arranging a band from The Regiment and this year we cut the cost by two thirds to just over £700.00. We have to pay the Lancastrian Corps Band and Pipes and Drums, plus met them with tea and coffee when they arrived, a buffet lunch plus £650.00 for attending to cover their cost. You will see from the breakdown of the cost attached that we have to pay a set charge, greet with Tea/Coffee on arrival at hotel and supply a buffet lunch after the service and concert.
A lot of people approached Padre Baines and me saying this Church Service was good (Padre Baines thought so too), and would have been happy to go along with this. This means we could do away with having a march to and from the hotel.
Another item we must all consider is the fact that once again next year (2008) we have the FUN RUN in Blackpool. This has always caused us problems, meaning that we have to take second best with The Town Council because the fun run lasts for several hours and is in aid of the local charities, we must start off early. Once again as we are marching into the centre we must move off from the hotel at 0930hrs and be clear of The North Promenade by lO4Shrs, as the run starts at 1045hrs.
Because we must book the band and start arranging with the Council anti give some idea to the police if we will be doing the same the following year, we have to set the ball in motion and do the provisional arrangements on Sunday afternoon with the powers that be. When we have meetings later on to change them but only very slightly.
If we book a band it cost us around £700.00 to £800.00. Going to St John’s Church will cost us about £50.00 for the organist.
The other alternative would be to change the dates to June when we can book the time and assistance with the police and Town Council.
What we do is your decision; remember this is your weekend and you must have your say.
I ask you all to consider what I have said and if you are not certain what I am trying to get over to you all or you have some other ideas of what we can do, please either ring me or drop me a line. details on top of letter
I ask you all to fill in the attached form and return it to me and we can go by the majority vote.
