Tank Models
Some considerable time ago I put on site a picture of what was 3RTR Sergeants mess in Detmold, the picture would have been taken during the late 50’s. As I always say a picture tells so many stories so for your interest and perhaps a little feed back I have once again put the picture on site.
For the more observant you will note that there are two Tank models which had been placed at the beginning of the walkway leading to the Sgt’s Mess. Those tanks I believe had on different occasions been placed outside the guard room and officer’s mess depending on what function would have been happening at the time. I think for most of the time they lived in the guard room.
As I understand one of those tanks has survived the ravages of time and now sits suitably placed at the Arboretum which is located between Birmingham and Derby, just off the A38 north of Lichfield and south of Burton on Trent. You will see brown signs from the A38 directing you to the A513 junction signposted for Tamworth, where you will find the Arboretum. The address is Croxall Road, Alrewas, Staffordshire DE13 7AR. The Arboretum although I have never been is most certainly on my list of things to do.
The gentleman who looks after and renovates the model is seeking information as to its history and whether or not the other one has also survived. If there is anyone who remembers anything about the Tank models which if I remember correctly were made of metal and fairly heavy pieces of kit I would be interested to learn, it may be they went from Detmold to Fallingbostel and beyond, I cannot recall but there could well be those among you that do.
