1 Aug 07
It is with much sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of a British soldier from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment in Basra City, southern Iraq last night, Tuesday 31 July 2007.
The soldier died as a result of injuries sustained by an Improvised Explosive Device attack which targeted a British Forces Warrior vehicle patrol that was carrying out routine duties in the Mustashfa district of Basra City.

Corporal Steve Edwards
Corporal Steve Edwards of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment was killed by an improvised explosive device as he checked the safety of the soldiers traveling in his Warrior armoured fighting vehicle at Basra in southern Iraq. Known to his friends as 'Eddy' he has been described by his commanding officer as " ...a 'Tankie' to the core: proud, loyal and professional with an excellent esprit de corps. His years of experience and kindhearted nature will be a great loss to us all. His friend and comrade Corporal Mike Roberts said of him: "Eddy was a big man, with a big heart. He inspired and touched anyone who had the pleasure to come across him. Two of his many qualities that I admired were his loyalty and dedication to his friends and family" Another friend added "My thoughts are with your wife, and I know your child will grow up knowing how much of a great father and a man you were."
