The Florida sun is definitely getting to SOT. As fast as posts are made he hits the wrong button and deletes. Ghost 1942. A long time ago a few words of wisdom from a then politician were given to Asil Nadir in good faith, those words were “DON’T LET THE BUGGERS GET YOU DOWN” the same applies to you Ghost my friend. If you remember Asil Nadir was a Turkish Cypriot who made his fortune in a UK with a firm named Polly Peck. For whatever reason the firm went belly up causing poor old Asil to flee to Northern Cyprus but not before this politician had given him this watch with the words inscribed on the back “DON’T LET THE BUGGERS GET YOU DOWN” Inspired by those words Asil decided to return to the UK and face the wrath of the Poly Peck share holders. Don’t know what he is up to at the minute but just like yourself he faced up to those who chose to persecute him and became just as you are Ghost, a tower of strength who is more than able to face life without spell check. Keep up the good work.

Surely you could name a few on here Dave. Greg Read, David Sands and a guy Peter (I think) Stutchbury. Not sure about others but I am sure I would say oh yes if you mentioned the odd name?

Yesterday whilst pottering around in the garden I found myself being subjected to numerous mosquito bites, not nice. My thoughts went back to the time when similar happenings were taking place in Theford forest. I was wandering around in the area where 7 Armoured Division had assembled prior to the D Day landings paying particular attention to where various Regiments had been billeted. Mosquitoes where very much in evidence on that day too.

On a recent visit to Bovvy Tank museum we stayed as guests in the sgts mess, it was plagued with not only mossys but other not very nice insects that may well have been brought back from overseas in the luggage of folk coming back from overseas on courses. As an ex First and finest I was amused by one of the administrators " apologizing " for the Thirds apparent over representation in the museum, He was an ex Third Tankie officer and said it with a huge grin. Nice guy, sorry cant remember his name. As an oh by the way, any thoughts on the Mercian Regiment parading through no less than eleven towns on their return from Afghanistan./ both my wife and I are more than happy to show respect to those brave front line lads when our health permits but the need to parade through so many towns, some very close together puzzles me. Not objecting just, as I said puzzled Peter ex 1RTR 1960-72 Catterick, Munster, Hohne,Aden, RAC Trg RGT. Nice new site, well done and thanks for allowing me on as a guest Cheers and beers Peter

Detmold it seems was such a long time ago but my memories of it remain quite vivid. I don’t suppose I will ever forget Hermans Denkmal a monument that I had walked to from where we were based at Hobart Barracks on so many occasions. The monument itself commemorates the Cherusci war chief Hermann or to name him more correctly Arminius. Arminius recorded a decisive victory in 9 AD over three Roman legions that were under command of Varus. All this history did not seem so important at the time and true to say it is only latterly that I have taken more interest. Having spent so much time in the area of the Teutoburger Wald, both in Hobart Barracks and in numerous married quarters I felt I knew the area reasonably well. Tony Clunn who was RSM 3 RTR in 1981 in many ways was responsible for renewing my interest for it was he who wrote so vividly about Arminius and the way he annihilated those three Roman Legions. Together with his knowledge of Roman history and his metal detecting skills he wrote a book that I was unable to put down until its conclusion. If you have not read the book and you have a thirst for Roman History and more importantly had spent time in the area of theTeutoburger Wald then reading the book is a must.
