Hi guys. Joined the 5th as REME attached HQ LAD late 66 and moved to Wolfenbuttel with them. During the first winter I accompanied a bunch of guys on what was described as "winter warfare" but was more like a winter holiday on the ski slopes. We tried to learn how to stay upright on the things. We stayed at a house in the mountains near Kirschsteinhutte run by a woman who we all called Mutti and her son who I believe was called Hans. Man could she cook!! Is there anybody on the site who was there and has any photos. I can't recall anyone with a camera but you never know. For me it was a memorable experience as the Bedford 3 tonner I was driving decided to ditch its self by falling on its side into the river. I spent a couple of days getting it out with the help of an American recce crew and a further few days at the American base getting the dam thing going again so I missed the first week of training. (My excuse for not being able to get the hang of skiing). If there's anyone who was on the same ex lets hear from you and maybe exchange memories. Did I mention that the 5th was the best posting ever. Great bunch and many fond memories.
