PRESS RELEASE

FOUR GENTLE GIANTS SWIM TO THE AID OF CHARITY

Four Alvis Stalwart ex military amphibious vehicles will take part in a sponsored swim on Glen Riddings, Ullswater on Sunday May 20th to help raise money for Heart & Lung Charity - New Start - which supports the Transplant Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester.

Local man and father of 4, Ivan Flavell of Elland, Halifax aims to raise both money and the profile of organ donation as he is currently on the waiting list at Wythenshawe Hospital for a Lung Transplant. A third of the names on the waiting list die for lack of suitable donors - of which there is a desparate shortage nationally. Ivan is taking an active role to not only keep himself busy whilst waiting for his transplant but to raise awareness of the problem with organ donation and to raise much needed funding for the Unit that will eventually save his life. What a lot of people do not realise is and are surprised at is that the Transplant Centre at Wythenshawe is their local hospital for such life saving opertions. It serves the North West and all of it's citizens.

Janice Taylor of New Start said: “This is a fabulous event to participate in for all the family, helping to raise money for the heart and lung patients we support. Please support us it really does make a difference to saving lives.”

I am posting these few pics that flav took and sent to me, I have asked his permission to post them.

This lady went on the stally in case we needed extra floatation and said she would give flav the kiss of life if needed

One of the many little helpers, well done to them for a great job

This lady was a young 82 yr old who would not let the height of the stally deter her from going out on lake, So it was a battle of the stalwarts, Allison (the ladies name) won, with the help of pecker and myself, she thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the ride on the stalwart
She spoke to flav for quiet a while afterwards and wants to be kept informed of flav's progress.
Here's to you allison................ FEAR NAUGHT

OK then, when & where is the next Stally event???? I'll make sure I'll be there. I was down Slimbridge for 10 days, caught the last of the "Bores" on the Seven. Maybe you should take them down there in September/ October and ride the Bore alongside the surfer's!!!! The last time I took a Stally for a swim, was in the Weser in "19god knows when" I entered the water in 4th gear to get my own back on the chopper pilot who gave me a lift once in his Skeeter, his nickname was "Danny the woodcuter" !!!!!

All this stally talk has triggered off a memory of when we lived in Warminster, 1977 - 1979, and during the winter of '78 we had the most amazing snow. Overnight the snow had fallen and when we woke up the next day it was as high as the window sills, it was higher than our son who at the time was four years old, we know that because he jumped in it and we lost sight of him.

Many people in the surrounding villages of Warminster were stranded without food or drink and our troops, which included Toptosser, went out in the stallies to these villages and took along sustenance and fuel. The roads often looked completely closed off, but the lads managed to get through driving the stallies up on the banks and virtually tipping them over. Toptosser told me that the old folk were so pleased to see them and that everyone got a buzz out of doing what was for them quite an exhilarating experience.

Perhaps some people can also remember the times when throughout the country the unions were going on strike and the troops were sent up to Edinburgh to carry out firefighting duties. Toptosser got to drive a Green Goddess and took great pleasure in hammering the life out of them. He remembers one experience when a building next door to a brewery was on fire and they had to spent hours just hosing the brewery down to keep it cool, I reckon he wasn't thinking of the danger just the fact that all that whiskey was going to go up in flames!

Having completed my first 12 months as a ‘boy soldier’ at the Royal Armoured Corps Junior Leaders Regiment at Bovington in Dorset, in 1976 I went into adult service as a 'Tankie' with the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment (known as ‘The Westcountry’s Own’ or ‘The Armoured Farmers’) to serve on Main Battle Tanks, eventually as a commander, until 1990. I now live with my family on Merseyside and create artwork in my ever decreasing amount of spare time. Unfortunately 3RTR ceased to exist in 1992 when it amalgamated with 2RTR but, the Regiment's family spirit lives on amongst my friends and myself and regularly, reunions keep our spirit of 'belonging' alive and well!

cwgc Described by our leader Pecker (Admin Webmaster) as being all seeing all hearing whilst still being able to keep a view on daily posts and up dates. Up to a point yes says I thinking that Press Gangs were a thing of the past. Clearly our Pecker is having non of that and remembers well that gangs of soldiers or sailors were sent out to enforce naval or military service on able bodied but unwilling men, usually by violent coercion. Well that’s our Pecker a one man press gang doing his best to make FearnaughtIII a successful and interesting site for one and all so of course I am happy to help were ever possible. Amongst other things and what may loosely be connected to military history is another passion of mine family history to that end if any one has family connections with military personnel killed in the last two world wars I would be happy to see if I can find any further information regarding their deaths. click my photo to find out more
