I was wondering if any of you can remember the compo of the 50's. Up to now all I can find is the Tea was loose and used to be thrown straight into the BV with the sugar and and cans of condensed milk, left to stew for a while and then cups dipped in and passed around the crew.
Margarine and biscuits brown were also there.
Some main meals that I have found were Mutton Scotch style, which does sound revolting and Irish stew but they were not to be liked that much.
Was coffee issued I presume not as it was fairly expensive in those days?
I know that when on ops you also got Cigs and chocolate issued was the chocolate in the metal tins with 4 bars per tin and as hard as bullets. Remember eating it as a kid and did the cigs issued come in 20's or 10's?
Also found some of the cigs issued were woodbine, navy cut, services and darts.

I remember that tea was not made in the BV, it was made by boiling the water in the Benghazi then brewed it in the Dixie, still using the sugar and the evaporated milk. some where I have a photo of just this procedure on Detmold Station platform while waiting for the flats to move. In the compo there where tins of egg and bacon, bacon on its own (very salty) oatmeal blocks that you could make into porridge, Brummy Northwood tried it hated it then stuck it on to the bazooka plate it took us ages to chisel it off. There was bars of soap, toilet paper (for small arses) mostly used for writing messages on. I quite liked the treacle pudding (fried of course) and the ginger pud, I shall sign off now as nostalgia is getting to me.

My favourite was the apple pudding and I also liked the chicken supreme.On a night move our driver put some tins against the exhaust to be eaten later but found out when he opened them in the dark that two of them were marge-like yellow water.

No one has mentioned the rich cake,and in my humble opinion the compo sausages were the best thing ever.As an after thought,hard tack biscuits with cheese processed and apricot jam took some beating.

Founder of the site spending most of my young life with the 3 RTR family along side me dad Sgt Brian C Reynolds (MR MT) and mum Babs the site was built in memory to them I served with 1 RRF and spent some time along side F SQN 3 RTR in Cyprus the rest is history
Served with the Regiment for 22 yrs in various capacities. Played Rugby,Cricket and Hockey for the regimental teams.
Left the Regiment in 1981. Now living with wife of 30 yrs Janice in sunny Weymouth. Have now left active security but still employed as consultant for a number of firms in the area.
I enjoy watching International Rugby and am a keen but totally useless Computer freak.

In 1975 I fulfilled my childhood ambition and joined the Army. Having completed my first 12 months as a ‘boy soldier’ at the Royal Armoured Corps Junior Leaders Regiment at Bovington in Dorset, in 1976 I went into adult service as a 'Tankie' with the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment (known as ‘The Westcountry’s Own’ or ‘The Armoured Farmers’) to serve on Main Battle Tanks, eventually as a commander, until 1990. I now live with my family on Merseyside and create artwork in my ever decreasing amount of spare time. Unfortunately 3RTR ceased to exist in 1992 when it amalgamated with 2RTR but, the Regiment's family spirit lives on amongst my friends and myself and regularly, reunions keep our spirit of 'belonging' alive and well!

I followed in my father’s footsteps and joined the Tanks, after he had completed service from 1950 to 59 in the Sixth before he went to the Third on amalgamation leaving the colours in early 1981 after 30 odd years service. I joined the Third in 1982 and served until the amalgamation in 1992 going on to the Second in Fallingbostel. I still wear Black coveralls and run a Challenger 2 simulator building for tank gunnery in the Midlands.

Described by our leader Pecker (Admin Webmaster) as being all seeing all hearing whilst still being able to keep a view on daily posts and up dates. Up to a point yes says I thinking that Press Gangs were a thing of the past. Clearly our Pecker is having non of that and remembers well that gangs of soldiers or sailors were sent out to enforce naval or military service on able bodied but unwilling men, usually by violent coercion. Well that’s our Pecker a one man press gang doing his best to make FearnaughtIII a successful and interesting site for one and all so of course I am happy to help were ever possible.
Amongst other things and what may loosely be connected to military history is another passion of mine family history to that end if any one has family connections with military personnel killed in the last two world wars I would be happy to see if I can find any further information regarding their deaths.
